The Backyard, Washington Square Village

Residents connected with Native American cultural traditions through dance, art and storytelling at this community event featuring presentations by American Indian Community House and Nadema Agard.

The event is scheduled to begin with a traditional Powwow Dance, interactive crow hop dancing and storytelling with Sheldon Raymore. Nadema Agard will present a talk, “The Arts & the Sacred in Native America”.

Hands-on activities will follow. Participants will learn basic knots and Spider Weaving string craft from Talon Ksa. There will also be a Demonstration and Teach-in of Traditional Native American Style Beadwork by Iakowi:he’ne’. Materials provided.

About the presenters
Traditional Powwow Dance, interactive crow hop dancing and storytelling will be offered by Sheldon Raymore. Sheldon is a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Nation and a multidisciplinary artist and award-winning grass dancer.

Nadema Agard Winyan Luta (Red Woman) will present a talk, “The Arts & the Sacred in Native America”. Nadema (Cherokee/Lakota/Powhatan) is Director, Red Earth Studio Consulting/Productions.

Learn basic knots and Spider Weaving string craft from Talon Ksa. Talon is a visual and design artist from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, he is Sicangu Lakota.

A Demonstration and Teach-in of Traditional Native American Style Beadwork will be held with Iakowi:he’ne’ (Melissa) Oakes (Mohawk language, She Gathers and Organizes People). Artist and designer Iakowi:he’ne’ is a Mohawk woman of the Snipe-clan family residing in Akwesasne Mohawk Territory and New York City.
