Our Mission

The mission of the Health Department at American Indian Community House (AICH) is to assist in raising the health status of American Indians and Alaskan Natives residing in the greater New York City area. The Health Department supports AICH in its efforts to foster social and cultural exchanges between American Indians, Alaskan Natives and other ethnic groups in the area.

 

Health Department Programs

The AICH Health Department offers a range of quality health programs to help American Indians and Alaskan Natives gain access to clinical services. While our focus is health promotion and disease prevention, we have partnerships with medical service providers that connect clients with affordable health care and free or low cost services.

Wellness

The Wellness Program at AICH provides case management services to eligible American Indians and Alaskan Natives in the greater New York City area. Focusing on screening, education, and promotion of healthy lifestyles, the Wellness Program provides access to free or low cost health care services with clinical providers.

The Women’s Wellness Circle Project, a group run within the Wellness Program, provides a forum for addressing current health barriers that confront Native women. Utilizing innovative and cultural-specific strategies, the project develops a network between AICH, health institutions, and Native women in the community.

Behavioral Health

The Behavioral Health Program addresses matters of mental health, alcohol and substance abuse, providing supportive and educational services through weekly events. Group healing activities utilize traditional methods, including art therapy and traditional music, while all programs strive to incorporate the traditional values and beliefs of the American Indian community. Diabetes

The Diabetes Program seeks to fight the alarming epidemic of type 2 diabetes that, in recent years, has been weakening the American Indian population. AICH’s Diabetes Program includes the Step Up to Health Walking Prevention Program, the monthly Diabetes Education and Support Group, and the Diabetes Prevention Group. Emphasizing prevention, self-management, and nutrition services, the Diabetes Program is able to provide to culturally sensitive services using evidenced based approaches. Additionally, the program coordinates educational series on nutrition, exercise, healthy eating, weight loss, and balanced living. The Kids’ Healthy Poster Contest motivates the American Indian youth to take note of proper diets while presentations on the use of native and traditional ingredients promote healthy diets for American Indians of all ages. Food and Nutrition

The Food and Nutrition program at AICH works in conjunction with the Diabetes Program to organize educational activities about healthy food choices. In addition, the Food and Nutrition Program coordinates a food pantry that offers perishable and non-perishable provisions to those in need. For more information, please contact:

  Access to Clinical  Services

The AICH Health Department provides access to medical services, but is not a clinical program at this time. The Health Department currently offers access to quality health care by providing referrals to clinics for medical attention.

If you are interested in learning more about our medical partners or need a referral, please call (212) 598-0100 between the office hours of 9:30am to 5:30pm, Monday through Friday and ask for the Health Department or extension 222.
